Outsiders Radio: Episode #56

AIR DATE: October 2019

SHOW THEME: Brothers Osborne

ERIC: Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the fifty-sixth episode of “Outsiders Radio.”

If you’ve been to our Double Down shows this year, you MAY have heard that song as our “walk on” music.  We used it in Philadelphia and Grand Rapids.  Sometimes we do, sometimes we don’t.  It’s like everything in the Double Down Tour…lots of surprises, lots of unexpected moments.

Since our last episode of Outsiders Radio, we attended a little celebration in Nashville.  They have these things called “#1 parties.”  They’re very unique to Nashville.  The purpose is to commemorate #1 songs, and honor the writers. In keeping with the Double Down theme, they celebrated TWO #1s: Round Here Buzz and Some Of It.  They held the party at one of the hangers at the Nashville Airport, where we shot the video for Desperate Man. There were a lot of speeches, and here’s a bit of what it sounded like.

I’m Eric Church and you’re listening to Outsiders Radio on The Highway.  There was a lot of new music released this past month.  Brantley Gilbert, Ruston Kelly, The Carter Family (with Carlene Carter), and Chris Janson all had new albums.  In addition my buddies Brothers Osborne released “Live At The Ryman.”  It’s well over an hour of music, filled with band jams and John’s guitar solos from the first song to the last.

John:Yeah we wanted you to know what you’re up against. Our second song is Shoot Me Strait, half the song is kind of a band jam guitar solo and this weird arrangement, and there’s no better way to go out there and say this is what you’re up against, if you’re not into guitar solos, you might as well leave now, so we put it all out there as soon as we can.

There’s a taste of Brothers Osborne’s new Live At The Ryman album.  Having the guys on Outsiders Radio allowed us to ask each of them: What are you listening to right now?  Starting with TJ:

TJ: What I’ve been listening to a lot lately are actually The Cars. The vinyl at the house, playing it a lot, Rick’s unfortunate passing recently kind of resurrected that for me. It’s amazing that record, the guitar solos, the songwriting, the singing performances, been listening to that lately, a throwback, it’s an oldie but a goodie.

That’s what TJ Osborne has been listening to lately.  So we asked the same question of his brother John.

John: It’s hard to say, I’m always listening to blues, but I’d say someone off the beaten path for me, not the public, is Anderson Paak, that guy’s amazing, really cool musician, singer songwriter, hip hop artist, his music doesn’t sound like anyone, his overall demeanor and energy on a track is second to none.

That’s Anderson Paak featuring the legendary Smokey Robinson, an example of what John Osborne has been listening to lately.  Next category for TJ: Favorite Classic Country record.

TJ: My go to classic country song is really hard to pick. I would say just really, I’m a big Merle Haggard fan, so I don’t know if I have a favorite, it really depends on the mood, although been listening to a lot of George Jones recently, so can’t pick a favorite, but I’d say my favorite classic country artist is Merle Haggard.

That’s TJ Osborne’s favorite classic country artist Merle Haggard.  Same question to his brother John.

John: It’s hard to say which song I’m listening to, but the record I always listen to, been burning it up for the past five years of my life is Willie Nelson Sings Kristofferson. To have someone like Willie Nelson pay homage to Kris Kristofferson, you have a great storyteller telling great stories written by someone else, it’s so cool, and he does it with such great justice, I love that record.

Can’t go wrong with that, Willie Nelson singing a classic written by Kris Kristofferson, the favorite classic country song of John of Brothers Osborne.  So final subject: Favorite Female Vocalist:

John: Our favorite female is someone we can both agree, my wife Lucie Silvas, who’s so great I married her. She’s the best singer on the planet, best people, she sang on both our records, she’s on tour now wit Heart & Joan Jett, she’s crushing it, she’s my favorite

TJ: There’s some great females, we’re about to with the CMA Awards will honor the females this year, hopefully bring some attention to something it deserves.

That is Lucie Silvas, who is the wife of John Osborne of Brothers Osborne. The duo just released a new album: Live At The Ryman, and we’re proud to feature them and their favorite music this week on Outsiders Radio.

Just a few weeks ago, some new members were inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.  One of the new members actually joined me on The Outsiders Tour a few years ago: Dwight Yoakam.

Dwight Yoakam: He was very gracious about having us out, and Brandy Clark was on part of that tour, and she’s doing me the honor of singing one of our songs. I had touchstones, and along the way I had guideposts, like Larry Gatlin, there were others, Gary Stewart, of course Buck & Merle, they were my touchstones, along with Bill Monroe. So I’m flattered that any of the current generation of country artists references me ever or pays any kind of attention to anything I ever did.

Congratulations to Dwight Yoakam on being made a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.  I also want to congratulate Ashley McBride on being named Breakthrough Artist at this year’s CMT Artist of the Year Awards.  She’s also nominated for CMA New Artist of the Year.  Speaking of which, we’re happy to say we have a few CMA nominations as well.  It’s very possible you might even SEE me performing on the awards show Wednesday November 13th, broadcast on ABC-TV.

As we wrap thing up, we still have a few cities left on the Double Down Tour: Two nights in Washington DC, one show only at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and then we’ll end the tour with two nights in Sacramento.  Looking ahead to next year, we just announced that we’ll headline Stagecoach on April 26th.  So definitely more shows coming up in 2020.

We’re going to close with something special.  By now you’ve heard Keith Urban’s hit We Were, and you probably know I’m one of the writers.  So the two of us got together and did a new version of it.  Hope you enjoy it!  See you next time on Outsiders Radio.
