Outsiders Radio: Episode #7

Hey, it’s Eric Church back for the SEVENTH episode of “Outsiders Radio”. It’s AUGUST and I cannot believe it, but it is that time again, summer is winding down… I’m starting to see football helmets… and yes, kids are headed back to school. I used to look forward to going back to college, not for the classes, but so we could get the band back together again and start playing college bars. Such a great time. We would always come with new songs that we discovered over the course of the summer, and of course people would constantly request what they wanted to hear. The catch was if we didn’t know ‘em, we would learn ‘em and tell them to come back next time we play here and we’d play the songs. There is just a lot of great energy around the big changes that are leaving summer behind, and ringing in a new chapter, maybe grabbing a little more freedom. It makes…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #6

Hey this is Eric Church, back for the sixth episode of Outsiders Radio. I’m sitting on the bus at Ascend Amphitheater, I’m about to play two shows by myself here, but we’ll talk about that later on… It’s July, and even though it’s late in the month I can’t help but thinkin’ about this great country we live in. I got a chance to play with Willie Nelson on the Fourth of July; one of my musical heroes. And we’ll talk about that later on and some things that went on there, but so many great musical events happen around The Fourth, from huge concerts to small town Main Street parades. There’s a good time to reflect on how good we have it. It is still a country where you can chase your dreams, it is still a place where you can speak your mind and I think we have some serious work to do to keep it that way. Without those truths, I wouldn’t be talkin’ to you…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #5

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the fifth episode of Outsiders Radio. It’s June here in Nashville and that means the start of festival season. Two big ones coincide in June here and this year they fell on the same weekend. What I speak of is CMA Fest and Bonnaroo. Two very different types of festivals but interesting music can be found in both; you do need to know where to look. CMA Fest as everybody knows brings all the country stars out to the stadium, but it’s the small stages, it’s the late night underbelly, that’s where you find the coolest stuff. The thing I’ve said many times that I like about festivals…it’s that sense of discovery is what it’s about. It’s not about what you may or may not know or the big acts that you know are performing. It’s about those other acts. Now speaking of discovery, and late night events, one such underground…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #4

Hey, it’s Eric Church…sitting on my bus on The Outsiders World Tour, back for the fourth episode of Outsiders Radio. It’s May, and I’ve had another very interesting month. First of all, I turned 38. I also got a chance to play a Grateful Dead tribute show called “Dear Jerry” for the late, great Jerry Garcia. When I went to college at Appalachia State University, every year I would always go to MerleFest. Really it was in college that I was really introduced to Jerry Garcia. I knew the Grateful Dead, but the Jerry Garcia Band and some of the stuff he did with David Grisman, stuff like “Russian Lullaby,” and stuff that I used to learn note-for-note, you know back when I was in school. It really was a key part of learning to play guitar, cause I would just sit there and play note-for-note everything he played. And it was just a huge influence on me, and to be…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #3

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the third episode of “Outsiders Radio”. It’s April, and spring has sprung right here in Nashville. I was thinking about this next show and thinking about what it should be. Because of spring I started thinking about my college days. We used to play 5 days a week back then…but when spring came, people took their clothes off, and everybody partied. Some of our best shows were in that sweet spot–April, May, right around finals. We played a bunch of cover tunes and about two or three really bad originals. But, if we didn’t know it and people requested it, we would learn it and play it the next night. That was how, that’s how we did it back then. Playing covers is a big part of learning how to become a good musician and entertainer. It’s also is a great way for a professional to show another side of themselves.

Outsiders Radio: Episode #2

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the second, count ‘em two, second episode of Outsiders Radio. Just got in off the road and as I have been most of my adult life, we’re always touring. I was thinking about this next episode, and what it should be, and it hit me… LIVE tracks. So, I’ve always believed, you know, it’s so important to get out there and take your music to the people. It’s not the record label, it’s not even radio that matters. The fans are what matters. I struggled a lot at the beginning of my career. I wasn’t, maybe, making the music that the gatekeepers wanted, but it was you, the fans… although in very small numbers, that were passionate… and you made my music YOUR music. I’ll never forget how we built this together. So, I was on stage this past weekend and it got me thinking about all those great artists that came before me. I always…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #1

Outsiders radio with me, Eric Church. It’ll be a one-hour show once a month on Sirius/XM’s “The Highway.” I’m honored to be given the opportunity, actually I really can’t believe they’re giving me a microphone to do whatever the hell I want. Anyway, I hope we can share some cool music [and some] cool moments on the show, maybe a new perspective on people and places. We’ll figure it out together. Here we go.

This month marks the one-year anniversary of the release of The Outsiders album, and since they are calling this Outsiders Radio, I guess that’s right. So to set the tone, here is something I’m not supposed to play. I’ve said many times that it’s not just about how great the songs are, a record has to be a cohesive thing, it has to feel like it’s a part of the project. And one of my favorite songs that we’ve ever recorded was this song and Since I’m not…
