Outsiders Radio: Episode #28

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the twenty-eighth episode of “Outsiders Radio”.   It’s been a few weeks since the final shows of the Holdin’ My Own Tour.  We wrapped it up with two sold-out nights in Nashville.  The first night broke an attendance record, and then on the second night, we broke THAT record.  The last night was possibly the loudest night of the entire tour.  Several times, I had to just stop and take it all in.  It was the most beautiful sound I could ever hear.  Now a lot of people may wonder what I do after a big tour like that.   Maybe THIS song will give you a hint.

That sums it up right there…I’ll be spending the next few months on the Livin’ Part of Life.  I’m Eric Church and this is Outsiders Radio.  We’re looking back at the final two nights of the Holdin’ My Own Tour…a couple of sold-out shows in Nashville. From MY…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #27

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the twenty-seventh episode of “Outsiders Radio”.   We just wrapped up the Holdin’ My Own Tour with two shows in Nashville.  Over 60 cities, no opening act, just me and the band for two sets with an intermission.    I said when we started that I did it because I could.  The fans made it possible.  You loved these songs on my albums, and you wanted to experience them live.  So that’s what we did.

We started the shows with a song called Hallelujah, written by Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen, who died last year.  A lot of artists have recorded it, including John Cale and Jeff Buckley.  Jeff’s version came out ten years ago, which was ten years after he died in a drowning accident in 1997.  That’s the version I use every night, with just a spotlight on a mic.

The late Jeff Buckley and Hallelujah. That’s how we’ve…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #26

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the twenty-sixth episode of “Outsiders Radio”.   It’s the end of April, so we’re about three-quarters of the way through the Holdin’ My Own Tour.  I must admit, it’s been incredible to have the chance to play 38 to 39 songs every night.  Each show has been special, and when I hear the sound of the fans, it reinvigorates me.  I hope if you’re listening right now, that you’ve been to a show this year.

With that in mind, let’s get things started with some live music.  This is from a special edition of my Caught In The Act album, just out last week for Record Store Day.  You can only buy it at your local indie record store.  Here’s the one that started it all: How ‘Bout You.

That one’s moved a little further in the setlist than it used to be.  How ‘Bout You, on Outsiders Radio.  April has been a great month for…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #19

Hey, it’s Eric Church back for the nineteenth episode of “Outsiders Radio”. It’s August and I just returned from playing two of the most special shows of my life. I got to perform 2 nights (mostly…) by myself at the famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO, just outside of Denver. What a place. If you don’t know about this place, check it out. It is an incredible natural Amphitheatre carved out of the red rock. It is difficult to explain this place, but if you had the opportunity to be there, you know what I mean. If you haven’t, put it on your list. It is a special place. So, what I thought I would do with this show is dedicate it to this venue and play some songs by artists that have shared this place with their fans. The first show there was in May 1906… a 25-piece brass band… and, well… I couldn’t scrape that performance up, so I‘m going to…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #18

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the eighteenth episode of “Outsiders Radio”. It’s July and in Nashville, well, like everywhere, it’s HOT. I mean hot as in temperature, hot as in the opinions swirling around politics, HOT as is the debate around where are we going as a country and as a world. I am no sage, and I am by no means a politician, but I am a musician, so I thought I’d play some tunes to celebrate the good things we’ve done and to remember where we came from, and maybe even make us think about where we’re headed. This train will roll on with or without us, I for one want to ride with open eyes…

“For What It’s Worth” 2:34 – Buffalo Springfield– Buffalo Springfield

“Revolution” 3:25 – The Beatles – The White Album

All right! This is Eric Church on Outsiders Radio. And that was two classics from the 1960’s… Buffalo Springfield’s “For…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #17

Hey, it’s Eric Church back for the seventeenth episode of “Outsiders Radio”. It’s June, it’s hot in Nashville, and it’s the month of CMA Music Fest and Bonnaroo. So I thought this time, this show, I’d play some tunes inspired by those events this month. Some incredible music happens all around this town and not always at the big stadium show. I was able be a part of a couple really cool things this year, and of course I heard about a couple more… so let’s get to it. Here’s a song from a new artist who I love. Her album came out this week, and she caught a good buzz playing around CMA Music fest this year with a lot of people. Check out Maren Morris….

“80’s Mercedes” 3:22 – Maren Morris– Hero

“Tools of The Trade” 4:05 – Charlie Worsham – Rubberband

That was “80’s Mercedes” by Maren Morris followed by Charlie Worsham singing “Tools of the Trade”. One…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #16

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the sixteenth episode of Outsiders Radio. It’s May and right now happens to be the kick off of an important weekend. Schools are starting to let out for summer, pools and theme parks are gearing up all over the country, and summer music festivals are starting to come into view. But more importantly, the end of May brings Memorial Day; a day to remember, and give thanks for the great men and woman that have given their lives for our way of life. All the promise of fun that comes with the approaching summer is possible because people have sacrificed to keep us free, so we have a lot to be thankful for. And let me be one of the millions of voices that say, thank you. Thank you to the ones that have given their lives to let us all chase our dreams. Thank you to the families that carry on incomplete, so that we have a…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #15

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the FIFTHTEENTH episode of “Outsiders Radio”. It is APRIL and as I was looking back on our prior shows, I realized that we were due to revisit one of my favorite topics… cover tunes. I have another batch of sweet covers to share with you… and since it’s April, it only makes sense that we start right here. Here is “Taxman”…

“Taxman” 3:26 – Dwight Twilley– The Beatles

This is Eric Church on Outsiders Radio. We’re spinning cover tunes on The Highway, and that was Taxman by Dwight Twilley. The taxman will certainly take your joy this time of year, so I followed that up with “Joy”, a Lucinda Williams song done here brilliantly by Betty LaVette. Come on Johnny, bring us some Joy…

“Joy” 3:56 – Bettye LaVette – I’ve Goy My Own Hell To Raise

“Personal Jesus” 3:19 – Johnny Cash – American IV

Outsiders Radio: Episode #14

Hey, it’s Eric Church back for the FOURTEENTH episode of “Outsiders Radio”. It’s MARCH and we are in the heart of my favorite time of the year…the NCAA Basketball Tournament…March Madness! Many of you already know I am a HUGE college basketball fan, and of course, I bleed blue for my Carolina Tar Heels. I was there this year for a heartbreaking loss to the team that we shall never name. So, at the time of this taping, we are still alive… therefore…

“Sirius” 1:55 – The Alan Parsons Project – Eye in The Sky

“Carolina Blues” 4:44 – Blues Traveler – Straight On Till Morning

This is Eric Church on Outsiders Radio and we just played “Sirius” by The Alan Parsons Project on Sirius. This was the song our chief export walked out to every night during the Bull’s heyday, you know the guy, the Tar Heel… Michael Jordan…(also, makes a decent pair of boxer briefs…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #13

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the thirteenth episode of “Outsiders Radio”. Lucky number 13…hmm...I was thinking about this episode and it struck me; a lot of people view 13 as unlucky. Every year February brings the Grammys to the music world. We all either watch, or slyly inquire about who wins, which undoubtedly leaves a lot of people that didn’t win maybe feeling unlucky. Then again, there are some pretty big Artists that have never won a Grammy. My question is, were they unlucky? Or are they actually the lucky ones? Well, what I thought I would do is walk you through some of these “Grammy-less” artists and you can tell me. let’s try this for starters… No Grammys, I repeat NO Grammys…

“We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions” – Queen – News Of The World

“I Wanna Be Sedated” 2:29 – The Ramones – Road To Ruin

That was Queen and The…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #12

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the TWELTH episode of “Outsiders Radio”, which means we’ve been doing this for a year on Sirius XM The Highway. We sit here in January… it’s wintertime in Nashville. I’ve been spending my time here and in North Carolina, getting in some down time before we start back up. They dragged me off a mountain for the National Championship game… which was a very cool experience. It’s really easy for me being a football fan to go to something like that, to talk football. We played the tailgate party, and watched a great game… I guess that depends on your perspective, but I had a good time either way. As I returned I couldn’t help being hit hard with the news that both David Bowie and Glenn Frey have moved on to the great beyond within days of each other. Both so young. And it seems like we lost a lot of great ones over the…

Outsiders Radio: Episode #11

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the ELEVENTH episode of “Outsiders Radio” right here on The Highway. I cannot believe we’ve been through eleven of these this year. It’s the closing of 2015 and the beginning of a new year. A new year full of possibilities. So, I thought for this show we would look back a little and man, what a year it’s been… but more importantly at the end of every year, we’re gonna take a look forward. I want to be music heavy on this show. Music, at least for me, is a marker of time. Years from now you hear that special song and you are transported right back to that moment and being in that moment. Music has always has that power, and if you’re listening, we made it through 2015… so we should all be thankful. I am thinking maybe we should start with some of the biggest moments in music this year… one word on this one… Adele.
