Outsiders Radio: Episode #37

March 1, 2018

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the thirty-seventh episode of “Outsiders Radio”.   This month I’m going to put the spotlight on the ladies.  I’ve had the chance to sing with some great women over the last few years.  Some on record, some on the road, and some on TV shows.  I’ve also written with a few. Let’s start with Rhiannon Giddens.

My thanks to the great Rhiannon Giddens for singing with me on that song.  We sang it together on several TV shows, including the 2016 CMA Awards and the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.  For those of you who don’t know, Rhiannon is a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a Grammy winning band from my home state.  She really brought a style and authenticity to that song that wouldn’t have been there without her.  Let’s hear Rhiannon sing one of her OWN songs.

That’s Rhiannon Giddens with one of her recent songs Better Get It Right. I’m featuring some of the great female singers I’ve had a chance to work with over the past few years.  Another great example is Valerie June.  Five years ago, I asked her to join me on the Academy of Country Music Awards to sing Like Jesus Does.  After that, people were asking “who was that woman in the red dress?”  Later that year she released “Pushing Against A Stone, produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys.  From that album, here’s Valerie June.

After we sang that song on the ACM Awards with Valerie June, it just needed a female harmony singer.  Who better than Joanna Cotton?  Like Valerie, Joanna is from Memphis.  She’s sung harmonies on my records since Chief, and joined me on the road on The Outsiders Tour.  But BEFORE that, Joanna made a few solo records.  Here’s Joanna Cotton.

We’re spotlighting some of my favorite female singers this week on Outsiders Radio.  Joanna Cotton has been with me on the road for about 5 years, and she was a big part of the Holdin’ My Own Tour last year.  So let’s get a couple songs that feature Joanna Cotton.

When I do that song on tour, I’m usually joined by Joanna Cotton.  But a few years ago, I called on heavy metal singer Lzzy Hale to join me on the CMT Music Awards.  Lzzy is the lead singer in the band Halestorm, and at the time, they were part of The Outsiders Tour.  Critics talk about how there aren’t a lot of women getting attention in country, but it’s not much different in heavy metal.  So when a dynamic woman takes the stage at a heavy metal concert, it can turn a few heads.  But she’s becoming the voice for a lot of women who like that kind of music.  You can hear what I’m talking about in this song from Lzzy Hale and Halestorm.

The unmistakable voice of Lizzy Hale & Halestorm.  As you can hear, there’s a lot of diversity in the women on this show.  Soul, Blues, and Heavy Metal.  Now for something completely different.  A few years ago I heard a singer named Cam.  She quickly became one of my favorite singers.  So I invited her to sing on my acoustic show at Red Rocks.  We did a duet on Like Jesus Does.  At the time, she had a big hit called Burning House.  But I’m going to play her new song because, once again, it’s so different from everything else out there now.

That’s some powerful singing there from my friend Cam.  I mentioned that she joined me three years ago for my acoustic shows at Red Rocks.  She opened one night.  The OTHER night, we had Maren Morris.  That was a pretty good weekend!  I’ve had the chance to do quite a few things lately with Maren.  We did the BMI Songwriters Workshop in November.  She was in Austin with me for the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame show.  A couple months ago, she joined me on the Grammy Awards in New York, where we sang Tears In Heaven with Brothers Osborne.  She’s a great soulful singer with a big, deep voice.  By the time this show airs, she’ll be on her honeymoon with her new husband Ryan Hurd.  So congrats to Maren & Ryan.  Here’s the current hit from Maren Morris.

Once again, best wishes to Maren Morris and her new husband Ryan Hurd.  There are lots of married couples in the music business.  This next singer is married to the great guitar player Derek Trucks.  I’m obviously talked about Susan Tedeschi.  She & her husband recently played a couple of shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.  But I got to sing with Susan on a song from my last album.

That’s Susan Tedeschi joining me on Mixed Drinks About Feelings.  It’s been a lot of fun featuring the ladies on this edition of Outsiders Radio.  We’re going to close the show with a woman who just released her debut album “Girl Going Nowhere,” featuring the song A Little Dive Bar in Dahlonena.   She’s a great singer/songwriter named Ashley McBryde.  She joined me last year in Chicago to sing her song A Bible & A .44.   See you next time.
