AIR DATE: APRIL 2016
Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church back for the FIFTHTEENTH episode of “Outsiders Radio”. It is APRIL and as I was looking back on our prior shows, I realized that we were due to revisit one of my favorite topics… cover tunes. I have another batch of sweet covers to share with you… and since it’s April, it only makes sense that we start right here. Here is “Taxman”…
“Taxman” 3:26 – Dwight Twilley– The Beatles
This is Eric Church on Outsiders Radio. We’re spinning cover tunes on The Highway, and that was Taxman by Dwight Twilley. The taxman will certainly take your joy this time of year, so I followed that up with “Joy”, a Lucinda Williams song done here brilliantly by Betty LaVette. Come on Johnny, bring us some Joy…
“Joy” 3:56 – Bettye LaVette – I’ve Goy My Own Hell To Raise
“Personal Jesus” 3:19 – Johnny Cash – American IV
“Mr. Tambourine Man” 2:29 – The Byrds– Mr. Tambourine Man
“Take Me To The River” 5:03 – Talking Heads – (Live)
Johnny Cash taking on Depeche Mode on “Personal Jesus”, followed by The Byrds doing Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man”. In 1965, Dylan was being covered like no one else… in fact, there were at least THIRTEEN versions of Mr. Tambourine Man recorded…crazy. The same year Dylan released it on his album Bringing It All Back Home! We closed out that set with “Take Me To The River”…Talking Heads taking on Al Green, and not losing the soul… very nice job. Here’s one that most don’t know is a cover, but it was first released by Joni Mitchell in 1969, and in 1970 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young put their spin on it…
“Woodstock” 3:54 – Crosby, Stiils, Nash & Young – Déjà vu
“Not Fade Away” 2:46 – James Taylor – Covers
“Chevy Van” 2:49 – Eric Church – Caldwell County
And there was “Woodstock” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, covering The Great Joni Mitchell. After that, “Not Fade Away, James Taylor covering Buddy Holly and alas, myself, “Chevy Van”, covering Sammy John’s and also Waylon Jennings…one of my favorites growing up, from my parent’s generation but was one that I just fell in love with. I used to play it in bars and clubs. My brother and I would actually take harmonies and sing on that. To this day I still play it sometimes at shows and get requests for it, and sometimes I’ll do it. Next, and only on Outsiders Radio, is The Great Patti Smith song “Because The Night” done by The One and Only, THE one and only, Bruce Springsteen. Check it out…
“Because The Night” 3:25 – Bruce Springsteen– The Promise
“Sing Me Back Home” 4:19 – Keith Richards – A Stone Alone
“Turn The Page” 6:06 – Metallica – Garage, Inc.
Hey this is Eric Church and I just rocked The Highway on Sirius XM. You just heard
“Turn The Page”, Metallica… doing the Bob Seger classic that captures life on the road so well. There’s so many lines in that song I lived directly. That was actually the longest running #1 song that Metallica ever had… ELEVEN weeks at #1. Which is a crazy stat, crazy song, what a song. It’s what we do, we keep on. Before that you heard Keith Richards covering the late, GREAT Merle Haggard, who kept on to the very end, passing away on his 79th birthday. We’ve lost a lot of people this year. I don’t know that anybody affected me like Haggard, and not sure in my career, if anybody, since I’ve been doing this has affected me like Merle’s passing. It was a hard one to get through, for what he meant to me and what he meant to the music and I think he’s the greatest country singer we’ve ever had. I want to close with this. As I was saying, we’ve lost so many in the last twelve months it’s just mind-boggling. And since our last show, with Merle and Prince, here’s to both of them… Nothing Compares 2 U.
“Nothing Compares 2 U” – 5:10 – Sinead O’Connor – I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got
