Outsiders Radio: Episode #8
AIR DATE: SEPT 2015
Hey, it’s Eric Church back for the EIGHTH episode of “Outsiders Radio”. It’s SEPTEMBER …. Fall is in the air, and football is back. Next month I am playing a festival in my home state of North Carolina called the American Roots Festival. This one is special to me because I have memories of going to Walnut Creek Ampitheatre as a kid. It is also special to me because it is one the rare times I get to play among artists from lots of different backgrounds and styles. That sounds like a great radio show! So, I am going to keep it simple and spin you guys some tunes from this great group of acts. Maybe I’ll intrigue you enough to come out and see it live!
BUT, before we start, I want to not forget that this is the month we pause to celebrate Labor Day, one of my favorite breaks in the grind. A tribute to working men and women. President Grover Cleveland signed Labor Day into law in 1894. Fast forward to 1974, to Cleveland ,OH, where a DJ on WMMS introduces the United States to Rush, via this… enjoy…
“Working Man” 7:10 – Rush – Rush
OK, now that our juices are flowing, let’s get to music from this year’s American Roots Festival. There are two days to this thing, and I am playing both days. October 17th and 18th. Let’s start with day one… here we go
“Traveller” 3:42 – Chris Stapleton – Traveller
“Bound For Glory” 5:28 – Tedeschi Trucks Band – Revelator
Traveller by Chris Stapleton and “Bound For Glory” from Tedeschi Trucks Band. If you don’t know Susan Tedeschi, you need too… an amazing vocalist. Not to mention that Derek Trucks kid ain’t bad on guitar either! On we go, with some more tunes from the American Roots Festival… day one… get ready…here’s a couple by The Roots
“What You Want” 1:24 – The Roots – The Best of The Roots
“I Don’t Care” 4:03 – The Roots – The Tipping Point
“Highway Song” 6:08 – Left Over Salmon – Euphoria
“Highway Song” by Leftover Salmon, a band from Boulder,CO. These guys go back to 1989, when they formed by accident when a local band The Salmon Heads needed to fill a couple of spots and recruited some guys from another local band called The Left Hand String Band… and what do you know… Leftover Salmon was born. Another great band on this festival will be Railroad Earth from Stillwater,NJ. They borrowed from a Jack Kerouac short story, “October in the Railroad Earth” for there name… check it out… here’s “Mighty River”…
“Mighty River” 4:45 – Railroad Earth – Bird in a House
“Float On” 3:28 – Modest Mouse – Good News for People…
“Float On” by Modest Mouse rounds out our sampling for Day One, October 17th at the American Roots Festival at Walnut Creek Ampitheatre in Raleigh,NC. On to Day Two, who do we have ahhhh yes, Ms. Crow… take away
“All I Wanna Do” 4:32 – Sheryl Crow – Tuesday Night Music Club
“Soulshine” 7:47 – Gov’t Mule – The Deep End
“Empty Heart” 3:15 – Grace Potter – Midnight
Sheryl Crow, followed by Warren Haynes and his band Gov’t Mule with “Soulshine” and then Grace Potter doing “Empty Heart”. As you can see, these two days at Walnut Creek Ampitheatre are going to be quite a musical experience. (expand on local food vendors, etc) Hope you can join me there. There are many more acts that I just don’t have time to play, but come check it out, you won’t be disappointed… oh yeah and then this guys going to play too… till next time, we always got room for Willie
“Whiskey River- LIVE” – 3:31 – Willie Nelson – The Essential Willie Nelson
